Ambassador Thomas Pickering served more than four decades as a U.S. diplomat. He last served as under secretary of state for political affairs, the third highest post in the U.S. State Department. Pickering also served as ambassador to the United Nations, the Russian Federation, India, Israel, and Jordan, and holds the personal rank of Career Ambassador. The Ambassador will speak on the current threats to the Iran deal and their possible outcomes in addition to how the current administration is affecting U.S. Middle East policy.

Looking back at 24 years of fiction writing, storytelling, and psychodrama work, Elmougy will review intersections among her tracks of work. She has come to realize that everything she does carries with it the spirit of resistance. In her talk, she will explain what she means by “resistance,” and what it is like to be on this journey at this particular moment in Egypt’s history.

Dr. Dennis Jett is the former American ambassador and senior director at the National Security Council. He joined the School of International Affairs at Penn State University after a 28-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service. His experience and expertise focus on international relations, foreign aid administration, and American foreign policy. He will join the Middle East Studies Center at Slippery Rock University for a lecture concerning the incredibly relevant pitfalls of U.S. Foreign Policy specifically regarding nuclear policy. The Consortium for Christian–Muslim Dialogue presents a panel discussion by Suhail Abboushi (Business), James Bailey (Theology), Bernadette Paolo (African Studies), and Nihat Polat (Education), moderated by Barbara Murock (Immigrants and Internationals Initiative, Allegheny County Department of Human Services).
James Pickett (Department of History) will give a compelling, multidisciplinary speech about genies, Islamic Law, and romance that focuses on the culture of pre-colonial Central Asia and its contradictory tendencies. Dr. Pickett's research at Pitt focuses on Central Eurasian history, Russian and Soviet history, and Islam and Communism. This event features responses by Dr. Neil Doshi (Department of French and Italian) as well as Jeanette Jouili (Department of Religious Studies).
