In this book, Dr. Steven Kramer explores the complex, triangular relationship between the French Republic, Jews, and Muslims. It is the first book to compare the experience of French Jews and Muslims over the longue durée, tracing their experiences and interactions in both metropolitan France and the colonies under the evolving regime of laïcité. This historical and comparative approach does more than illuminate past and current tensions, it suggests how they may be resolved.

The AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies and The Maydan, the Center’s public-facing scholarship platform, present the Seventh Annual Graduate Student Book Review Colloquium on Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies to be held virtually on Thursday, December 7, 2023.
*For the first time in 2023, we are offering a specific theme through a partnership with the Black American Muslim Internationalism Project (BAMI), a Luce Foundation supported research initiative directed by Dr. Aminah Al-Deen at ACGIS.
With the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rise to power in India, anti-Muslim rhetoric and discriminatory measures have been increasing. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, such rhetoric has reached an unprecedented peak, with Muslims subjected daily to hate speech, racist attacks, and violence. Driving these developments is the Hindutva ideology which reflects the tangled intersection of nation-building and Hinduism, dating back to the foundation of the India nation-state.
