General lecture by Denis Provencher (Arizona), “Queer Maghrebi French”
Part of the Zaytuna 2017 Fall Lecture Series on the “Immigration Crisis: The Collapse of the Post-Colonial State.” Dr. Hatem Bazian will focus on a critical section of his new book “Annotations on Race, Colonialism, Islamophobia, Islam, and Palestine,” dealing with the immigration crisis and the collapse of the post-colonial state.
Following the events in Charlottesville, it has become tragically clear that hate groups are on the rise, and hate crimes have become more prevalent in the United States. What are the causes of this? Can anything be done to stop it? And what are the limits posed in resisting organized hate groups and those who promote violence against and hatred of others, given the constitutional protections of free speech and freedom of association that extend to all of us?

The Muslim Student Association at Pitt will host their annual Halal-A-Palozza. A celebration and cultural showcase event, where guests can experience different cultures, taste great food, and learn more about of Islam's far reach throughout the world.
Umar Abdul-Ghaffar is a local Muslim artist who creates one-of-a-kind pyrography art with an Islamic message. Pyrography literally means "fire writing" in the original Greek. A collection of both functional and decorative items works will be on view at the Community Gallery. Join us to celebrate an Islamic twist on the art of decorating wood with a painted metal tool and heat!
