Torture in the French-Algerian War

Thursday, November 3, 2016 - 12:30pm

Her lecture will focus on the ways French authorities systematically used torture in the French-Algerian War (1954-1962). The lecture explores that practice and tests two theses: 1. Democracies tend to use torture in asymmetric conflicts when faced with terrorist methods. 2. Torture goes along with the erosion of basic democratic structures and principles.
